Missing cd-rom or dvd-rom / WPD Filesystem error

I had trouble on a workstation where the DVD-rom was completely inaccessible.  It was not even recognized.   Device manager showed a bang on the device.  Uninstalls/reinstalls of the driver did not help or resolve the issue.   Additionally there was a WPD File system driver error popping up when I rebooted the pc.

Sony Vaio Vista SP1 update received acpi.sys error
